"You Weren't Meant to Be Human" by Andrew Joseph White completely wrecked me.
I was sobbing for half an hour after I finished it and felt shaky and raw for the rest of the evening. But I loved everything about it.
First of all: this book isn't for everyone. Its main focus is on unwanted and forced pregnancy as body horror and it contains explicit descriptions of self-harm, SA and gender/ body dysphoria. I'm not a fan of violence just for the sake of shock or entertainment and this is one of those books that manages to contextualize the depicted violence in a way that made sure that it was not glorifying/ justifying it.
So, if you can stomach all of the above (and a hivemind of worms) this book is amazing and exactly what I love about horror. It is full of emotion, it shows how transphobia is linked to (domestic) violence and restricted access to reproductive rights and it opens up a space for thought and conversation.
This is already one of the best books I'll read this year.
